Female Distiller of the Year

Franziska Bischof

The first one it the line to receive a disitilling license (Brennrecht) was grandfather Ludwig. It was handed on to the son and again one generation later on to the son and … 2015, on to the daughter. She’s called Franziska Bischof. For the last three years she has run the fourth-generation distillery in the Lower Franconian town of Wartmannsroth with full responsibility. She did her apprenticeship for the eau-de-vie sommelier at the TU Weihenstephan, and completed her vocational training as a state-approved distiller in May 2017 at the Bavarian State Research Center for Horticulture and Agriculture with the mark “very good”. Her first drink was a whisky called “Rebel”. Maybe this name reveals something of herself: She has turned the family business upside down, is called “Franziska – Die Brennerin” and recently opened the “Destillathek”, a square block made of exposed concrete and with large windows, which shows even architecturally that things have changed. – DESTILLE BERLIN awards Franziska Bischof the title “Female Distiller of the Year 2018”.

Theresa Warter

The biography of Theresa Warter astonishes. At the age of 24 she leads the Dachstein distillery founded by her father, 980 meters above sea level, in the Salzburger Land, Austria. Her enthusiasm for spirits began early: The student of a sports and wellness school should write a thesis on alcohol. But instead of the expected list of health risks, she deals with the flavors and nuances of spirits. She must then ask for special permission to complete at the age of 17, the training for eau-de-vie sommelier. At the same age, she completes the Destillateur-Aufbaukurs (distillers advanced course) at the VLB in Berlin. In 2015, she passes the training to become a master of fruit processing with honors. In the Dachstein distillery, she now distills whiskey, gin, bread brandy, fruit brandies, herbal spirit and the regional Zirbenschnaps. – DESTILLE BERLIN awards Theresa Warter the title “Young Distiller of the Year 2018”.

Outstanding Innovation

Mikko Mykkänen

A former slaughterhouse in the middle of Helsinki, a cubical brick structure with a large chimney, an abandoned boiler house. Since 2014, the Helsinki Distilling Company has been residing there with master distiller Mikko Mykkänen. Together with two friends he brought the craft of distilling back into the city of Helsinki. It was the first distillery founded in over one hundred years. He now distills classic spirits such as whisky and aquavit, but Mikko Mykkänen’s passion are innovations such as a sea buckthorn gin and a probably unique sea buckthorn pomace brandy. Together with the State Research Institute of Finland, he is currently working on a project dealing with the adaptation of Far Eastern distilling techniques for whisky production. In the bar on the first floor of the building you can taste the creations while watching the master distiller at work from above. However, a new construction site is already opening: The distillery’s team is building a sauna in the disused chimney – heated – solely by the waste heat of the distillery. – DESTILLE BERLIN awards Mikko Mykkänen the title “Outstanding Innovation 2018”.

Lorenz Humbel

“For the cherry, I do everything I can”, he himself once confessed. Lorenz Humbel from the Humbel Spezialitäten Brennerei in Stetten near Zurich is cherry lover, cherry expert, cherry professional. The distillery was founded in 1918 to process the harvest of the local farmers. Lorenz Humbel had his epiphany when he discovered in a book 300 varieties of cherries. It was his passion to find these and to then distill them genuinly. In the meantime, the Humbel assortment list includes distillates from the Basler Langstieler, Roter Lauber, Hemmiker, the Schattenmorelle (morello cherry), the Lampnästler. Crowned by a cuvée of genuine cherry brandy, matured in cherry wood barrels. Lorenz Humbel lives in the Swiss tradition of cherry brandy distilling and at the same time revitalizes it. – DESTILLE BERLIN awards Lorenz Humbel the title “Best in Tradition 2018”.

Anyone who likes status and seeks status liquors is out of place in Becketts Kopf. The bar in Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin is more profound. For 14 years, Cristina Neves and Oliver Ebert have been exploring the spirit of spirits. Radical and earlier than anyone else, the two have been enthusiastic about artisanal spirits, have come into direct contact with distillers, have been interested in the ideas and passions behind the products. And so they have compiled a backboard, which shows a clear alternative to the classic, omnipresent standard range from the portfolio of global spirit companies. – DESTILLE BERLIN awards Beckett’s head the title “Farm-to-Shaker Bar of the Year 2018 “.

Ruben Neideck

The centrifuge is buzzing. Not in a pharmacy, not in a chemistry lab, but with Ruben Neideck in the Berlin Velvet Bar. In it you find herbs that Ruben got from local farmers or from the Berlin urban gardening project Prinzessinnengärten. In the centrifuge he extracts the aromas that he then adds to his cocktails. Ruben Neideck calls himself a “lab geek”, his tools include a rotary evaporator. The techniques of fermenting he has in common with the new local cuisine. His drinks menu changes every month. Only what nature of the region offers at the time is allowed to go into the “bar kitchen”. His spirits come from artisanal distilleries and liqueur producers, they consist of solely natural ingredients. – DESTILLE BERLIN awards Ruben Neideck the Title “Farm-to-Shaker Barkeeper of the Year 2018”.
